29 Aug

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Wednesday afternoon arrived the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Ikeja, as part of her visit to Lagos State, where she is billed to spend time with victims of modern slavery during her brief stay in the nation’s commercial hub.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the UK prime minister arrived at exactly 4.18 p.m. at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, aboard an aircraft of the Royal Air Force.

NAN reports that the prime minister’s visit to Lagos comes barely eight weeks after the French President, Emmanuel Macron, visited the African Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, accompanied by his deputy, among other state officials, had earlier arrived at the presidential lounge, MMA to receive the prime minister.

Also on ground at the airport were the top echelon of the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Mrs May had earlier arrived in the country and met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the New Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja.

Nigeria and Britain also signed two agreements on Defence and Security partnership as well as Economic Development Forum before she headed to Lagos.

Mrs May’s visit to Nigeria is part of her tour of some Africa countries.

The Prime Minister on Thursday is expected in Nairobi, where she will meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and see British soldiers training troops from Kenya and other African countries in the techniques needed to identify and destroy improvised explosive devices before they go to fight Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

The prime minister is on a trade mission in an attempt to bolster Britain’s post-Brexit fortunes. This is her first visit to Africa since she became Prime Minister in 2016.

She is accompanied by a 30-man business delegation as part of her efforts to “deepen and strengthen partnerships around the world as the UK prepares to leave the European Union (EU) next year.

Oyo State Government Demolishes Yinka Ayefele, House In Ibadan “Fresh Fm”

19 Aug

Lawmaker, governorship aspirant and other residents of Ibadan on Sunday lamented Sunday’s demolition of the Music House owned by popular musician, Yinka Ayefele.

The Oyo State Government demolished the multi-million naira edifice at around 4.30AM on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the structure, located on the Challenge-Toll Gate dual carriageway in Ibadan, housed the popular Fresh FM radio station owned by the musician.

A NAN correspondent reports that hundreds of residents had thronged the scene wielding placards with various inscriptions criticising the state government over the exercise.

Some of the early callers at the scene of the demolished building were Mr. Seyi Makinde, a PDP governorship aspirant; and Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the Secretary of Unity Forum, a splinter group in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress.

Also present at the scene was Hon. Olusegun Olaleye representing Ibadan North State Constituency in the State House of Assembly.

Makinde, Olatunbosun and Olaleye, however, appealed to the irate residents at the scene of the demolished structure to remain calm, urging them not to resort to self-help.

Calls made to the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, were unsuccessful as his two cell phone lines were switched off.

NAN recalls that the state government had marked the structure for demolition, insisting that it contravened the state ’s planning laws.

But Ayefele had approached an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan seeking to stop the planned demolition.

Ayefele’s counsel, Mr. Olayinka Bolanle, in an ex parte motion filed before the court, sought for an order of the court restraining the state government from demolishing the property pending the determination of the suit.

Bolanle also stated that due process was followed in the construction of the structure while relevant approvals were obtained from the state’s departments and agencies associated with land and housing.

Justice I. Yerima ordered the claimant to ensure service of the court process on the respondent and adjourned the case till Monday for the hearing of the exparte motion.

28 Jun

President Buhari said that it is unfair for some Nigerians to accuse him of not cautioning gun-wielding herdsmen that have carried out many attacks in different parts of the country, because he looks like them.

President Buhari said this during a townhall meeting with Plateau state elders yesterday June 26th. According to him, unpatriotic politicians, and not herdsmen, were behind the various attacks. He said these class of politicians are doing everything possible to use the killings they mastermind for their benefit in 2019

‘‘What happened here in Jos is very bad. The question of leadership, from your household to whatever you are, is justice. The bottom line is justice. That is why wherever I go, I will always appeal to the leadership of the communities, the law enforcement agencies to always have control of their constituencies. Whatever is being given to the media, we have to be very responsible about it. Take for instance the situation in Benue. The Benue subsistence farmer knows that the Nigerian cattle herder that he knows doesn’t carry nothing more than a stick, occasionally sometimes something to cut grass to feed his cattle. But the present herder, I am told, carries AK47 and people are even blaming me for not talking to them because maybe (they say) I look like one of them. There is some injustice in these aspersions.” a statement by Garba Shehu quoted President Buhari as saying
