Impeachment Proceedings Against Gov. Ambode Begins

Akinwunmi Ambode is in danger of becoming the first Lagos governor ever to be impeached.

That’s because members of the State House of Assembly have gathered enough signatures to call a special session that would include considering impeaching the governor, who is facing a full collapse of his political support.

The Assembly had accused the governor of gross misconduct and illegally spending from the 2019 budget, which had yet to be approved.

They had given the governor seven days to defend the allegations or risk impeachment.

Supporters of the governor repeatedly referred to the legislative investigation as a “political witch hunt” and blasted lawmakers for the acts.

A band of supporters Wednesday stormed the Assembly complex to protest against the planned impeachment of the state Governor.

Ambode is staring down the political fight of his life this week as he and the Lagos Legislature prepare for a showdown over his impeachment.

The battle came upon the state suddenly. At a time when most residents, including politicians, would rather enjoy the campaign runs, the Legislature is now confronting a report that says Governor Ambode is unfit to hold office by notable politicians in the state, Per Second News gathered Wednesday.

As governor, Ambode hasn’t succeeded in building many constituencies that might now rally to his defense.

In fact, much has gone wrong, starting with one of his first acts — feuding with his political leader, said a member of the state assembly.

Lagos state officials said that he was not guilty of impeachable offenses and would fight “every step of the way.”

The governor proclaimed last week that he was not guilty of impeachable offenses and would fight the process.

A civil society organization Wednesday asked the Lagos state assembly to account for N28.8billion running cost.
