Sunday, president-elect Donald Trump told “60 Minutes” that he wouldn’t take a salary when he takes office in January.

Current President Barack Obama earns $400,000 every year, a high salary compared to other heads of state around the world. Just north of the U.S. border, Justin Trudeau earns exactly double the salary of a typical Canadian MP, taking home $260,000 every year. Angela Merkel is also paid well by international standards; the German chancellor has an annual wage of about $234,000.

When asked about his presidential pay packet on Sunday, Trump said “the answer is no. I think I have to by law take $1 so I’ll take $1 a year”. Trump isn’t the first U.S. president to take the symbolic gesture of forgoing the job’s salary. Herbert Hoover and John F Kennedy are two other notable examples of presidents who gave up their annual salary and donated them to charity. Away from politics, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page are examples of billionaire tech CEOs on a $1 salary.
